If you follow the research and anecdotal-based discussion around kratom, you may have read that daily use of kratom – officially Mitragyna speciosa – could have negative consequences. For people seeking relief from regular bouts of chronic or acute pain, this can be worrisome, since their symptoms often arise on a daily basis. So, is it ok to use kratom every day?
Short-Term Side Effects of Daily Kratom Use
The fact that patients interested in or already using kratom as asking this question is a good thing. It’s always important to be well-informed on any therapeutic substance you choose to use; just because something is all-natural doesn’t mean it’s 100% problem-free.
There are many people who take kratom every day and claim they have experienced no negative side effects. Some patients find daily use can lead to excess sleep or raised blood pressure. Withdrawal effects can develop as well; nothing fatal, of course, but sore muscles, sweating, and anxiety have been cited, which have the potential to lead to more serious issues.
One thing that certainly will happen if you take kratom every day is alterations in your tolerance. If you find, for instance, that you need to take 4 grams of kratom in a single dose to feel the necessary relief, over time you will need to increase this dosage to feel the same effects. If you are taking kratom twice a week, you might find you need to increase your dosage only ½ a gram over the first year (for example). If, however, you’re taking 4 grams of kratom every day, you could experience increased tolerance at three times this rate.
Though an increase in tolerance might not seem to affect much more than your pocketbook, larger doses of kratom have been shown to cause more side effects which, while generally mild and temporary, are still not much fun.
Long-Term Side Effects of Daily Kratom Use
According to the small amount of research that exists on the subject (due partly to the fact that widespread kratom use in North America is still fairly new), using kratom over a long period of time has the potential to cause loss of appetite and weight, constipation, insomnia, and hyperpigmentation of the skin. Note that these results were seen in high-dosage, long-term users in Thailand, not folks who turn to the herbal supplement in small doses, a few times a week.
Though these potential long-term effects aren’t great, there is no evidence kratom can damage organs or other functions of the body.
Can I Use Kratom Daily?
In the end, it’s up to you. Will your tolerance increase over time if you use kratom daily? Yes. Will this increase led to more serious issues? It’s impossible to say.
Ultimately, use your best judgment. Like any therapeutic product, herbal or otherwise, you shouldn’t be taking more than you need to feel relief. You wouldn’t pop three Tylenol if one got rid of your headache, right? If a twice-weekly dose of kratom works for you, that’s excellent. You’ll likely see a very gradual increase in tolerance but as long as your doses remain below 6 or 7 grams, short-term side effects should be minimal or nonexistent.
If you need to take multiple doses in a day (daily or otherwise), it’s even more important to make sure you’re using the smallest amount you need. Some people can find relief with just 1 or 2 grams. Another option if you’re beginning to worry about the amount of kratom you’re taking: try a different strain.
Flushing Kratom Out of Your System
Are you worried about the amount of kratom in your system?
One way to get a clean start is to do a “kratom cleanse”, ceasing use of the substance for a few days or more (depending on how often you generally use it). This can prevent buildup of the substance in your body and even slow tolerance development. If you absolutely cannot stop using kratom altogether, drastically reducing your dosage for a few days could have a similar beneficial effect.
