Where is Kalimantan?

At Original Harvest, we are proud to carry a great selection of premium, organic, lab-tested kratom strains that originated in the beautiful region of Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. Specifically, Kalimantan is comprised of the Indonesian part of the island, which is shared between Indonesia and Malaysia.

In total, Kalimantan makes up more than 70% of Borneo and in fact, Indonesians generally use the work “Kalimantan” to refer to the entire of the land mass.

“Kalimantan” comes from Sanskrit, an ancient language used throughout Southeast Asia. It means “burning weather island” or, technically, an island with high temperatures. It’s a suitable description of the humid and hot tropical climate on Kalimantan and Borneo.

Regions Within Kalimantan

Though Kalimantan takes up 73% of the land on Borneo, the territory houses just shy of 70% of the island’s population, with the rest residing in the Malaysian portion (Brunei and East Malaysia).

Kalimantan is divided into five separate provinces:

  1. West Kalimantan (Kalimantan Barat)
  2. East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur)
  3. South Kalimantan (Kalimantan Selatan)
  4. North Kalimantan (Kalimantan Utara – established in just 2012)
  5. Central Kalimantan (Kalimantan Tengah)

The total population of the territory is just over 12.5 million people, with the largest portion residing in West Kalimantan. Despite this division, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan has the largest metro population and is famous for its floating market.

Languages Spoken on Kalimantan

Though it spreads across just 210,000 square miles (falling somewhere between the size of California and Texas – the second and third largest states), Kalimantan has a population only slightly larger than Illinois (the 25th largest state). Despite its relatively small population, the territory is home to approximately 74 different languages, which are divided into 5 “families”. The most widely spoken languages are Ngaju and Banjar.

The Kalimantan Rivers

The Kalimantan region of Borneo is home to more than a dozen rivers and a number of tributaries. The waterways include:

  • The Barito River, which is 550 miles in length, originating in the Muller Mountain Range and flowing to the Java Sea. One of its affluents runs through the city of Banjarmasin.
  • The Kapuas River is 710 miles long and is the longest river in all of Indonesia. Also beginning in the Muller Mountain Range, the river terminates in the South China Sea.
  • The Mahakam River, 600 miles in length, runs from the Borneo highlands to the Makassar Strait, and past the city of Samarinda, which is the capital of East Kalimantan.

What is Kalimantan Known For?

The Kalimantan region is home to a beautiful and distinct array of fauna and flora which flourish in the 130 million-year-old Borneo rainforest. The island forest’s advanced age makes it almost twice as old as the Amazon!

The rich biodiversity of the island includes around 15,000 unique flowering plants, more than 200 mammalian species, and over 420 species of bird. The Borneo Orangutan, which has faced huge amounts of devastation leading to its spot on the endangered animals list, finds one of its only still-existing habitats in this region; other species for whom the region is vital include the Asian Elephant, Sumatran Rhino, and Dayak Fruit Bat.

Kalimantan Culture and History

On the island of Kalimantan, Sanskit inscriptions have been discovered that are dated from the late 5th century. Evidence of Indian influence also exist in the Buddhist and Hindu imagery which can be found around the territory.

Much of the Kalimantan population are ethnically Malay and Muslim, and the fact that many live in the coastal regions explains the territory’s relatively small population for its size. The Dayak are the indigenous people of Kalimantan, and they tend to live along rivers in the interior of the region. Missions have led to a large number of these communities following the Christian religion.

The Crazy Tourist recommends visiting these parts of Kalimantan, if you happen to find yourself on vacation on this beautiful tropical island:

  • Derawan Island, known for excellent diving and beautiful marine life.
  • Maratua Island in the Derawan Archipelago, where two famous lakes are found: Tanah Bamban and Hajj Buang.
  • Danau Sentarum National Park, a wetland area 132,000 hectares in size. Apes and monkeys can be found here, as well as crocotiles and storks.
