In most cases an over-large dose of kratom will result in uncomfortable but short-term and ultimately mild side effects. Even so, no one enjoys feeling worse after they take a substance intended to make them feel better. Kratom Powder Dosage

Like any product used for medicinal purposes, kratom has different effects in different doses. Unlike some medications, however, in many cases using more kratom alters the type of effect, rather than simply increasing the intensity – this is different from how you might take two, rather than one, Tylenol if you have a particularly bad headache. In the case of kratom, a different strain might be a better choice rather than a larger dose.

In other words, more kratom won’t necessarily strengthen every effect. For example, if you’re looking for more energy than you got from two grams of Green Vein Malaysian kratom powder, we would recommend trying White Vein Malaysian kratom powder instead, since increasing your dose of Green Vein is more likely to sedate.

The following dosages are approximations only, recommended based on the effects of an average sampling of patients. Always expect to alter your dose based on your personal body chemistry and remember: after a dose, you can always take more – you can’t take less!

Will Kratom Sedate or Stimulate Me?

Generally speaking, small doses of kratom powder (1-3 grams) will stimulate, while larger doses (3-6 grams) will sedate.

Of course, it isn’t that simple. The differing levels of certain alkaloids found in the kratom leaves (which develop during growth and also during the curing process) affect how strongly each quality presents. More of the alkaloid mitragynine means more stimulation. Higher levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine means more sedation.

Another thing to keep in mind: a strain can be both “relaxing” and “stimulating”. Usually, a strain that claims to stimulate and relax has a mentally energizing effect (making you feel alert, focused, productive) and a physically sedating effect (helping ease muscle tension and soothe pain). This could perhaps be compared to a non-drowsy painkiller.

What is “Fast” or “Slow” Kratom?

The “speed” of a kratom strain indicates its actual perceived effects – usually in smaller doses – not its alkaloid level. A “fast” strain will be more stimulating, while a “slow” strain will be sedating. A “moderate” strain falls somewhere in the middle. In most cases, Red Vein strains are “slow”, Green Vein strains are “moderate”, and White Vein strains are “fast”, though there are exceptions to this breakdown, too.

Finally, remember: every body will react differently to a single kratom strain. Always use your own experiences (and common sense) as the final determinant of your dosage.

How Much Kratom Should I Use

This guide doesn’t cover the wide range of benefits kratom offers. Rather, it focuses on sedation/stimulation and pain relief, as these seem to be the most sought-after effects. If your primary goal is energy or stimulation

At small doses of 1 to 3 grams, most kratom strains will be more stimulating than sedating. That said, Red Vein kratom powders are more likely to blend physical relaxation (read: pain relief) with this mental stimulation, while Green and White Vein kratom powders tend to have less of this latter effect.

    1. For mildly stimulating effects that won’t leave you completely crashed out on the couch but offers good pain management, use a small dose of Red Vein kratom powder: 1 to 3 grams
      1. For early or mid-day stimulation that will provide moderate pain relief, try a small dose of Green Vein kratom powder: 1 to 3 grams
        1. For morning stimulation with only mild pain relief, try a small dose of White Vein kratom powder: 1 to 3 grams

If your primary goal is pain relief, along with relaxation or sedation

At larger doses of 4 to 6 grams, kratom begins to act as a sedative, drawing you toward couch-lounging and sleep. Not surprisingly, Red Vein kratom powders will deliver more sedation, while Green and White Vein powders are less powerful.

        1. For pain relief and to banish insomnia, use a larger dose of Red Vein kratom powder: 4 to 6 grams
        2. For moderate pain relief and to encourage deep relaxation that may lead to sleep, try a larger dose of Green Vein kratom powder: 4 to 6 grams
        3. For mild to moderate pain relief (depending on the strain) and relaxation while still maintaining some mental alertness, try a larger dose of White Vein kratom powder: 4 to 6 grams

What About People Who Take 30 Grams of Kratom/Day?

You may find other sources that recommend taking doses of up to or beyond 15 grams of kratom powder per dose. At Original Harvest, we suggest limiting doses to six grams. This is due to the tolerance and addictive effects of kratom.

Kratom Tolerance

The more quickly you increase your dosage, the more quickly your tolerance will build, and you will have to increase further to feel the same effects. Starting with a smaller dose gives you more room to grow, or you may find you do not need to increase your dosage.

Kratom Addiction

Larger doses also better facilitate the addictive qualities of kratom. While some studies have shown kratom is no more addictive than coffee, anyone who needs their morning java to function knows this is still a legitimate concern.

Ultimately, strive to take only as much kratom powder as you actually need. We recommend beginning with only ½ or 1 gram of kratom per dose, though individuals with established opioid dependence will likely require higher doses. If you do not feel the desired relief from this minimum dose, then you may begin to increase your dose at a rate of about ½ gram per dose.

Less is More

Some kratom patients notice that the larger dose they use, the less effective the results. If you are an established kratom user and you find your high doses aren’t working anymore, try cutting back your dose, and you may be surprised.

The Kratom Cleanse

No, this is not a kratom-only diet! Some kratom patients suggest developing a “cleanse” period at regular intervals (such as once a month). These patients stop using kratom for two to four days each interval, to allow the receptors in the body with which kratom reacts to purge and reset. If you find your kratom is no longer working as well, you may want to try this method.
